Sally learned a LOT about Mount Rushmore this year in school. So, when we decided to drive cross-country there was no question, we needed to stop in SD. I've hit the Black Hills and Wall Drug and the Badlands (and even Mt. Rushmore!) on many on a previous cross-country trip but it's such a special area, it was great to spend a little time here again.
We stayed at the charming Roosevelt Inn, started the day at Mount Rushmore with a stop at the Crazy Horse monument,
drove through Custer State Park (I don't remember who told us to go there but someone did recently and I owe them a big thank you!),
and then checked out the Badlands.
Sally got 2 Junior Ranger books and 2 National Park passport stamps in one day! This time we skipped Wall Drug (between COVID and a 7-year-old who wants to buy everything it seemed like a nightmare) this time. I also think it's the first time I've ever been in this area NOT during Sturgis/bike week, which made it a little quieter. :)
